Our History
A building with soul in the heart of Lisbon
On Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, just steps from Rossio Square, the Coliseu dos Recreios and the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, stands a building that is part of Lisbon’s cultural pulse. This historic street, long associated with theatre and artistic life, has for decades been a meeting point for actors, writers and lovers of culture.
The property once belonged to the renowned Portuguese actor Vasco Santana, one of the most emblematic figures of 20th-century theatre and classic cinema in Portugal. A leading presence on Lisbon’s stages and in iconic films, his life was deeply connected to this very neighbourhood. His legacy still resonates in the character of the building: discreet, elegant and intrinsically linked to the arts.
Over the years, the building went through different phases. In March 2024, Europe Hotels International acquired the property and launched its first chapter under the name O’Artista Suites by Europe, operating it as serviced apartments with kitchens in the heart of historic Lisbon.
In 2026, that evolution reaches a new level with its transformation into Europe Lisboa Boutique Hotel, a five-star boutique hotel scheduled to open in summer 2026. The renovation preserves the original architectural essence while reinterpreting it through contemporary design, noble materials and spatial concepts tailored to the modern traveller seeking balance between culture, aesthetics and comfort.
Today, Europe Lisboa Boutique Hotel embodies this transformation: a place where history and design exist in natural harmony, where the cultural energy of Rossio, Bairro Alto and Avenida da Liberdade is felt at every step, and where each stay invites guests to experience Lisbon from within.
More than a place to stay, it is a building with memory — where the city’s artistic past unfolds into a refined and authentic contemporary experience.
THE VISION OF EUROPE HOTELS
The story of this project forms part of a broader legacy. Europe Hotels International is a family-owned hospitality company founded in November 1973 with the opening of the Europe Hotel Tenerife, then the third hotel in Playa de Las Américas.
Today, the group operates diverse hospitality concepts in strategic destinations such as Munich, Berlin, Lisbon, Tenerife and Mallorca, ranging from 3-, 4- and 5-star hotels in the Canary and Balearic Islands to urban properties and projects connected to luxury and fine dining.
